Neptune, California – home of the rich and the people who work for them. Life seemed perfect for Veronica Mars. About a year ago, she had it all: she was popular, she was friends with the rich “09-er” kids, she had a loving family, had a sweet and loving boyfriend, and a loyal best friend too. Next thing she knows, her best friend, Lily, whispers to her that she has a secret to tell her. Veronica never finds out what it was because soon after Lily is found murdered.
Now, Veronica Mars is Neptune High’s favourite outcast. She sits at the reject table looking in at the life she used to have. She ignores the nasty whispered rumours and presses on. After her father, Keith Mars, had wrongfully pinned the murder on Lily’s father, he is forced to step down as sheriff. Her mother leaves town unable to cope with the stain on their family name and the loss of income. Yet, Veronica sticks by her father’s side, helping him with his private investigation business. And there are plenty of jobs in a town full of cocky, competent sheriffs, snobs and the clueless, scandals, and murder.
One day, Veronica looks up a questionable licence plate, which she finds out belongs to her mother. Questions start flooding her mind. What was her mother doing back in Neptune? And what she was she doing meeting the richest man in town, Jake Kane, at a sleazy motel? Trying to find answers, Veronica breaks into her father’s safe, only to stumble on more surprising findings. Digging through his files, she notices he has been actively looking into Lily’s murder. He has new evidence only a month old. Then newer developments present themselves. Together, the father-daughter team decide the closed case has to be reopened. It’s back to square one. Everyone is a suspect again, even a few people they would have not considered until now.
Throughout the show, Veronica solves a small case each episode yet overall works on solving the biggest case of all – her best friend’s murder. To survive high school, she has thick skin and quick comebacks at her disposal. To be a successful sleuth, she is innovative with her disguises, even uses accents to play convincing characters. She’s clever, using hard facts to get even with her enemies or to crack a case. Veronica Mars is definitely a girl worth looking up to and to admire. She’s got backbone and definitely a girl you want on your side.
Despite her seemingly tough exterior, at the end of the day, Veronica has heart. Her new best friend and side-kick, Wallace, says it best when he tells her, “Veronica Mars, you’re a marshmallow.”
I realise this is an old show, but I wanted to shine some light on it to perhaps get new fans for the show. There are only three seasons, and it is a shame it got cancelled in its third season because it was a great show. Veronica Mars was a feisty one and made the show great.
For some more insight on the show, watch the trailer for season 3.
(Note: Ignore the poor quality, it is from a comic con viewing).
